A new world-wide concern about patient safety developed in the 1990s with the realisation that more and more surgery was taking place and that the significant and persisting level of complications from surgery was largely the result of faulty systems for preventing them. The following books illustrate this development:
- Atul Gawande, The Checklist Manifesto, Metropolitan Books, 2009.
- Suzanne Gordon, Patrick Mendenhall and Bonnie Blair O’Connor, Beyond the Checklist:What Else Health Care Can Learn from Aviation Teamwork and Safety, London: Cornell University Press 2013
- Peter Pronovost and Eric Vohr, Safe Patients, Smart Hospitals, Plume, 2011.
- Charles Vincent, Patient Safety, Wiley/Blackwell and BMJ Books, 2nd ed, 2010
